Summary

R-Type (1987) sent you into deep space with a tiny ship, a huge gun, and approximately no sympathy whatsoever. The R-9 Arrowhead could charge its beam for devastating shots, while the detachable Force pod doubled as shield, weapon, and occasional lifesaver. Levels crawled with biomechanical horrors, tight passages, and bosses apparently designed by someone who disliked happiness. Memorisation mattered almost as much as reflexes, but every hard-earned breakthrough felt magnificent. It was beautiful, inventive, brutally difficult, and utterly shameless about demanding another coin.

What it does well

Brilliant Force pod mechanic, spectacular bosses, distinctive biomechanical visuals, excellent weapons, and enormously satisfying mastery of each stage.

Where it falls short

Merciless difficulty, heavy memorisation, unforgiving checkpoints, and later stages could reduce inexperienced pilots to smoking space debris.

Verdict

A spectacular shoot-em-up masterpiece that rewarded memorisation, precision, and stubbornness while repeatedly finding imaginative new ways to kill you.
